Local History Champions Team Up for Qingming Festival at Capitola Library
A Conversation and Craft in Celebration of this Important Lunar New Year Festival
CAPITOLA, California — Santa Cruz Public Libraries is delighted to host renowned author Sandy Lydon and community hero George Ow on Friday, March 22nd at 10:00 AM at our Capitola Branch Library for a morning discussion and craft to learn about the Qingming Festival, one of the most important festivals of the Lunar New Year.
Qingming, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day in English, is a traditional Chinese festival observed by ethnic Chinese in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. During the first part of the event, Lydon and Ow will discuss the history and practices surrounding this important Chinese festival, and later will guide participants in a craft to make Chinese masks to take home. Although the event is geared toward adults, all ages are welcome to participate. This celebration aligns with Lydon and Ow’s commitment to making the history and contribution of Chinese people to Santa Cruz known and sharing Chinese culture and traditions practiced by many Chinese people with the community.
This is a wonderful opportunity to learn first-hand from two exceptional and knowledgeable people about one of the most important festivals of the Lunar New Year and bring people from all backgrounds together to learn about another culture and experience life through another’s world view.Registration for this event is strongly recommended as craft supplies may run out.
