Celebrate QingMing Festival: Honoring Our Ancestors and History
Did you know that Santa Cruz had five Chinatowns? Did you know that in 1850, Santa Cruz had only one Chinese resident? And do you know what the QingMing Festival is?

Literally translated, QingMing means “Pure Brightness Festival,” but today it is more commonly known as the “Tomb Sweeping Festival.” This traditional Chinese festival is celebrated on the first day of the fifth solar term of the traditional lunar calendar, falling approximately fifteen days after the spring equinox—typically on April 4, 5, or 6. This year, it will take place on April 4.
Families mark the QingMing Festival by visiting their ancestors’ gravesites to clean tombs, removing weeds, adding new soil, or trimming the grass. It is a time for remembrance and offering rituals, which include placing flowers, burning incense, and providing symbolic offerings such as food and paper money. Food prepared for the festival is cooked beforehand and consumed cold. Willow branches are also placed on gates and front doors to ward off evil spirits, while burning incense and paper money symbolizes respect for ancestors and appeasement of their spirits.
The QingMing Festival is widely observed globally. In Vietnam, it involves tomb sweeping, spring outings, and cold meals. In Singapore, offerings extend beyond ancestral spirits to the God of Soil and Ground. South Koreans also clean gravesites, though they forgo burning money. Japan commemorates ancestors through the Bon Festival, celebrating family ties, and Mexico’s Day of the Dead shares similarities in cleaning gravesites and communal offerings.
